Hi, I’m Dyah from Indonesia. This is my first post in here. I’m curious about Technical Director position but I’m not sure if it’s the right position I need to pursue or I might stay in creative lane.
I have a background as Full Stack Developer. I’ve been in programming world for more than 10 years (mostly it’s school time). However I keep trying to make 3D art, especially animation, whenever I could. Right now I’m switching career as 3D Animator Freelancer, hopefully I can work in a studio as LRC Artist.
To be honest I can’t decide between 3D animation and coding. I love problem solving part of coding, but I love animation so much as creative expression. When I work as a Dev, I keep thinking about animation and vice versa. So I thought why don’t I combine both. The problem is, because I spend most of my life mastering coding, I don’t have hands on experiences with the whole pipeline of 3D animation. I do make animation using blender and maya but I don’t find it inconvenience in order to create a problem I need to solve. I came across Technical Director because my mentor said that I can be a TD with the skills I have. Since then, I still don’t understand what TD is actually do, what kind of supports TD provide, how things I need to learn to be a TD, is there any demand for it (I haven’t found any of TD job listing in my country), and is it still worth it to pursue in this economy?
Anyway, I don’t know what my specific question is so I think I want to know your opinions about my dilemma.
