Why should we bother trying? AI will replace us anyway

Looking at recent advances in generative AI, I’ve come to realize that it has no limits and will soon provide much faster, more efficient, and more continuous production than what humans can do. I’ve come to think that no matter what job we do, the influence of AI will become stronger and stronger, and it could take away our motivation to live. What should we do? Is there an answer to this problem?

If you only care about a creating soulless cookie cutter car commercials or corporate art yes no need to try too much I suppose.

But I sincerely believe the physical act of creating the art is half of the battle. There all those other aspects of it that require soft skills or having a comprehension of the bigger picture of the product you are contributing towards. I don’t see any generative AI that can output slop after slop suddenly have a vision for an artwork or a product anytime soon. It just generates stuff

I feel this is the time to try even more than before since the barrier to entry to “create” is getting lower. We need to up our skills so that we can keep up.

I’ve seen countless people say the same thing as you, but I think it means that except for the top 10% who can create true art, everyone else will eventually be eliminated. The value of our skills is decreasing and we’re losing our uniqueness. The capabilities that companies demand from us are increasing, and I think it’s going to be a structure where it’s going to be difficult for the general majority to survive. Sorry, but I find it hard to be optimistic about this situation
every time I see people cheering about the small mistakes made by the pre-generated AI and saying that AI is still far from replacing humans, I feel like I’m watching a character in a movie whose plot armor is ripped off and triggers a death flag. And while I’m working, I constantly think about AI and wonder why I’m working here. I’ve been thinking about this problem for almost 3 years and I can’t find the answer

Well I certainly don’t have an optimistic look at AI and how it is going to affect the general public. If my previous message sounded optimistic that is by mistake. We are going to experience something called creative destruction.

Creative destruction (German: schöpferische Zerstörung) is a concept in economics that describes a process in which new innovations replace and make obsolete older innovations.[1]

But the question I would ask you is this: If you are certain that you will be made obsolete/redundant with your current skillset in your lifetime on your current vocation. What can you do about it?

I can see three paths one could take.
-Level up your skills
-Change careers
-Give up

AI “revolution” is coming no doubt. Nothing we can do about that. Society at large is not ready for what is coming. Again nothing we can really do anything about it. All I can do is focus on what I can change personally. Which is what I can act on and think about.

I used to think that I could do what I could do like you. But every time a new version of AI model came out, I became weak-hearted and started to constantly doubt my worth. I don’t think AI can create many new jobs through creative destruction. Other jobs besides mine will never have higher treatment or salary, and I can’t give it up easily because I have built a career in this industry. I really wonder how people can be calm in the face of this situation. How would you feel if someone asked you, “Why are you doing that when AI is better at it than you?” AI has taken away more value from people than you think. It has taken away the joy of people learning and creating on their own. What is left for us?

Anyway, I’m really sorry if my writing made people feel bad, but I’m really anxious.

The reason why you are doing it is where the silver lining is. If it is just about money then it may time to expand your avenues. But if it is about the joy of creation then it doesn’t matter if AI is good or not. Like why learn how to play piano since you will never be good as Beethoven. Or why work out ever since you will never be as buff as Arnold at his prime. We don’t have to do things just for the single purpose of being the best at that thing. We can just enjoy the process of creating

My way of staying calm is not looking at news ever. If I do I get depressed as well. I agree it really sucks.

You know, Big Tech is just reassuring people that AI is just a tool, but they are accumulating data by making people use unfinished AI, and I know that people are developing it to the point where it can replace people. Eventually, they will change their attitude and replace everyone’s labor, and they will make money based on the accumulated data under the name of “fair use.” It is still happening now. I know that this is not a competition with humans, so it is very unfair, and that is why creators or laborers are complaining here and there. We cannot avoid this situation, and we will eventually have to accept it, but until then, I think it is time to support those who speak up or act for themselves. Some may criticize them as Luddites, but wouldn’t anyone do that if their livelihood was at stake? People are more selfish than I thought. I think we should find a way to protect our own rights rather than relying on the ethics of others. Damn, I sound like a closed-minded agitator when I say this, sorry

I will be reiterating my point again. Let’s say you are right and everything will go to shit. It means all that is sensible to worry about are the stuff that you are in control of, your actions. Instead of worrying about what will happen think about ways of surviving upcoming changes. And if that requires making choices you are not happy about I am sorry about that.

But unfortunately life sucks sometimes

sry I bothered you. and ty for listening to me

i think this message from john carmack sums it up quite well

you dont need to fight against AI but you should look into ways to incorporate it into your toolset to elevate yourself and produce better results then AI can achieve on its own. this way by the time it gets better you will get better by default as well

My gut reaction:

I don’t care what AI can or might be able to do.
I want to learn it.
I want the skills.
I want the understanding.

I know others know more than me , and maybe AI will “know more”, But they are resources for me to learn from, not reasons for discouragement.

I’ll most likely die having not learned everything, but so what? I want to grasp as much of the process of video game art production, and its programming & engine implementation, as I possibly can, for my own curiosity and satisfaction.

That’s why I bother trying, anyhow. YMMV.
