If you feel comfortable with your languages, I would say yes, devote some time to the art packages. You should have a good idea of how to work with content and at least a general idea of how the software works under the hood. You don’t have to be making production quality art or animation, but at least understand the process.
But I mean like professional experience. We have a good art education here on my school and we are getting familiar with a lot of art stuff. But I know that professional experience with art is different then on school. So it’s better to do some years art and then go for the TA function?

Do you mean what sort of professional experience you should have for an internship? I wouldn’t think you need any professional experience for an internship…
For an internship for TA. because I hear a lot that much people always first worked as an artist.
