Community Roundup (7/26 to 8/17)
Aug 17, 2008 - 3:19 PM - by Rob Galanakis
Bi-Weekly Roundup

If you are planning on entering the Grand Opening Contest, please PM me as per the instructions in the thread.

TAO will be launching an interview series in the next week or two. Our first guest will be Steve Theodore, a Technical Director at Bungie Studios. If you'd like to be interviewed or would like to see someone interviewed, please PM myself or Adrian Walker.

We've brought on a new Site Admin to work with us on the community projects, and tie up technical loose ends. Hopefully, we should see more progress on some of the site and content initiatives we've laid out. Please welcome Aryeh Gregor to TAO.

Bi-Weekly Roundup

Check out this week's spotlight article: XPTable (.NET): ListView meets Java's JTable. It explains how to install, set up, and use a custom C# plugin. The XPTable is useful for those who want more than .NET's default ListView can offer, and the article is good reading in general for those who are interested in using any custom control in Max.

Adam Pletcher has been adding lots of content to the Wiki about Python: Check out the Portal:Python for more info and to see what he has been up... [Read More]

There are two relevant technical presentations:

Video 3, from Flagship, shows off a really cool asset management tool. It seems to be very full featured and automates things very well. It certainly isn't something needed for every studio, but for a studio that relied almost wholly on outsourced art, I am sure it saved loads of time and mistakes.

Video 7 is from Ubisoft, about Assassin's Creed. It is really an excellent presentation. He covers a couple excellent tips and ideas:
Using Skinwrap to create LoD's
Bone-vert aligner
Briefly describing his 'smart symmetry' script
Auto-render and composite
MaxAppLink, a clone of zAppLink for zBrush
