Whistle while you work

I know many artists would be really pissed if they couldn’t get their groove on while working. But I wonder how many TA’s listen to music while they work.

I’m the type of guy that finds it really distracting when I’m really focused on solving a technical problem or writing a script. I love to listen when I’m actually creating some artwork though.

I totally plug in when i’m working. . .sometimes it’s the best way to stave off the endless wave of requests:D:

Pandora Radio here.

Nothing with lyrics usually. I like to focus on the code, so soundtracks or unobtrusive beats like Hybrid do the job well.

And if you’re coding and listening to something like the Bourne Identity OST you can pretend you’re hacking a secret government agency for funsies.:D:

When I’m coding at work, no music. Sometimes when I code at home, I’ll listen to something with no lyrics (especially game and movie OST’s). Skinning or rigging, sometimes will tune into Pandora, Dylan, or some soundtracks, or no music.

I find it amazing people can code while listening to music with lyrics, I’d be so totally distracted. On the other hand, I don’t get distracted by room noise (unless I’m reading or doing something uber-difficult), so I guess to each his own.

Music all the time here - lyrics don’t bother me. I’ve been listening to lots of podcasts recently too (gaming related mostly, like 1up yours & GFW radio) but I can’t always listen to spoken words and code at the same time, it’s just too hard to concentrate. Same with audio books.

I listen to music all day, XM Radio online. Although sometimes I do get distracted while coding. If so, like everybody else, I switch to something without lyrics, like Techno (strange, but makes me concentrate the best), sound tracks or even classical.

Sometimes the office can get very distracting so pluging in helps me to ignore all that.

Music all the time except if I’m expecting a lot of questions/requests during the day.
I used to listen to Pandora until they had to stop broadcasting to UK IP addresses due to legal issues.

These days I just bring my iPod in. Meshuggah recently, nothing like some math-metal to get you in a programming mood

Does anyone use Rhapsody at all? The client is actually pretty lame (it obviously wasn’t designed by a TA :D:), but their selection is great. It does kinda kill my morning productivity, i will admit, i usually spend the first half hour of my day scouring the new releases and setting up a playlist, but worth the. . .i think its like 13 a month now or somethign like that.

I use Rhapsody and love it. I agree the client itself is pure junk but you just cannot beat 15$ a month for unlimited music as well as being able to copy it to your mp3 player… plus it keeps me from pirating music and hopefully a chunk of that fee goes towards the producers to get them to stop complaining.

Zune Marketplace is basically the exact same from what I’ve used of it, but since I’ve had a creative zen player I have no need to use that instead.

I find myself listening to music all day (though I’m usually making art and not scripting), but I do find myself sometimes going hours with just having my headphones on with no music playing being zoned out… like I am right now.

no music if i’m scripting or reading/writing docs…otherwise i’ll listen to my ipod or pandora.

it’s actually one thing i miss about doing game art or animation. i used to be able to animate, listen to music, carry on a conversation…juggle all at the same time.

I would agree that if I am scripting or doing anything technical I must have silence. I get so into coding that even if someone says hi to me I jump.

haha I have to say I’m the same way.

I am a bit pandora fan too, and sometimes I’ll see what my friends have put together on http://muxtape.com/

On a related area, since rarely one has the privilege to listen to music in the office using the speakers, what kind of headphones are you guys using? I bought a Sony MDR-XD200, but it’s really bad and makes my ears feel pressurized that I don’t listen to music at work anymore.

Any recommendation for a decent headphone?

I quite like the foldable Sennheiser PX100s. They have good sound with the ability not to be totally deaf to your colleagues shouting demands at you.

Plus they’re light to the point of forgetting you’re wearing them.

It’s cool to hear (sorry) how everyone works.

Work gave me a lightweight pair of JVC HA-NC80 noise-cancelling headphones, these have been great. Also nice to use without music, totally with you there Kovac!

If you’re going to buy headphones, I’d suggest trying them out at an electronics store. There’s nothing like plugging one into your mp3 player and playing some fav tunes. Sound quality can vary, and of course it’s very specific to the individual.

I use these:

Sony MDR-V150

Cheap, light, and they sound good. Granted they’re not mixing cans or anything, but they’re not supposed to be.:):

Cheers guys, I appreciate the recommendations. I saw this video on YouTube about the noise canceling headphones, and Sennheiser one seemed to be the best.

The only issue with Sennheiser is cost. But you get what you pay for.

The only thing that worries me is the size I think. The latest Sennheiser ones are huge so not sure if I would feel too much pressure on the ears, and heat, etc.

Anyway sorry to hijack the thread, carry on (:
