Someone at Polycount brought up an interesting idea, of using voice commands in 3d software. While it wouldn’t work for keyboard shortcuts, you could probably eliminate the entire UI, and have many things mapped to voice shortcuts. There are some cool possibilities.
I was wondering if anyone had thoughts or ideas (not that I’m planning on doing something like this, but just something to think about). My thoughts right now are to use Python/COM hooked up to a voice recognition software, that can then run the 3D program.
Brain waves recognition would be the real interesting thing of the future.
Starting with undo/redo as an example : you’d just have too think “undo” , “redo” , etc …
Also one thing I can think of is light speed brush selection and settings straight out of your mind while you’re painting something on your wacom tablet (in zbrush for example)
Yup, lots of work being done with brainwaves, unfortunately the hardware is still too expensive for the ‘democratization’ of research you are seeing with even things like genetics… eventually, hopefully.
Despite the noise problem, I still think people would grow to love it, in brush programs as well… you could effectively get rid of the entire UI and bring up only what is commanded (like Maya’s hotbox but based on voice… even more intuitive UI). A project idea to file away for another time, I suppose…
I recall a rather enterprising technical animator hooking up a driving wheel’s acceleration/break pedals up to scrub frames forward and backward in Max. Don’t know how well it worked, but I bet it made working more fun :):

Had I known that before Christmas, I would have bought 6 sets of pedals. That is awesome. Who did it?
Hehe Rob I think I was theone bringing this up I eventually ended up trying Dragon and Tazti to get a feel for voice recognition, and once past the weird/cool factor, it really wasn’t that reliable!
Alsoran : I hear that!! I actually have a xbox360 wireless controller hooked to my work machine at the office. I use it control Photoshop tools as well as brush size when sketching on the Cintiq. It obviously is a source of fun round the cubicle but zooming in and out of a picture when standing 3 feet away from the workstation always makes a nice impression!!
Yeah, I was using this for Max XYZ snaps and plane movement many years ago when I was doing large amounts of mesh manipulation. I was also remapping extra buttons on my mouse and other devices I could find for macros.
I’ve been following this guy for a for a while now:
There’s a guy here with RSI that has a footpedal mouse. I’m sure you could
wire whatever you wanted to that. Or you could use the footpedals that
come with steering wheel controllers.
If you wanted to get crazy you could get an arduino board and make whatever
controls you wanted.
