Upcoming "MetaSL based texturing" tutorial

I’m working on a tutorial about MetaSL based texturing in 3dsMax
2012. The first two articles are done so I thought I run them by
you. It’s pretty straightforward stuff so far but the set of utility
nodes might be of some use regardless.

Part I: Overview
Part II: A basic example

(I’ll update this post as the rest of the articles go online.)

Please let me know what you think.

UPDATE: Part III: Baking

UPDATE #2: Part IV: Displacement

UPDATE #3: Part V: An advanced example

The rest of the articles are online as well, enjoy!

Part VI: Tips and tricks
Part VII: Known issues
Part VIII: Node reference

Oh MetaSL…

Does anyone else remember the CGTalk thread that turned into a flamewar?

Oh and uh, great tutorials

Hmm, what was the flamewar about? Is there a practical
alternative for getting the same look in both realtime and
offline renders?

Sorry don’t get me wrong, metaSL is a pretty cool concept. The problem was how it was marketed, like it was ready to be used to make more optimized realtime shaders and was ready for primetime use. Just a folly demonstrating a lot of naivitee by a certain product manager.

Oh right, I know exactly what you mean. That, with some
naiveness on my own, resulted in disappointment at first.
