while I’m right now at the begining of setting up a complete, robust, flexible and future-proof VFX/Animation pipeline for my studio, I’d love to ask those of you who have experience or at least have seen Tactic in action.
I’m looking for a lightweight, yet powerful, fully-integrated (incl. in Windows etc…) solution for my artists so that they wouldn’t have to AT ALL hassle with data management and asset tracking on their own, but rather we all would rely on a server and db system that’d do this for us.
I’ve heard a lot about Tactic, but their site is next to nothing and I wasn’t able to find any info from real productions.
While I’ll be at this year’s Siggraph, I want to know prior to that what to expect. Because right now it’s up to a point:
Do I hire two to three programmers/scripters to write my own tracking and asset management software from scratch exactly built to our needs and software choices?
Or do I invest in an existing solution, production proven, tested, flexible and rather invest in one programmer to integrate our tools into that? (preferrable option)
So, if you have any info, PDFs, reviews, anything, on Tactic, please, do share. Also, what is te approx. price point?
Btw: I don’t want to go the Alienbrain way as it’s too robust and clunky to my tastes and it’s not as integrated to the software we use the way I’d like it to be.
i did a bunch of evaluation with Tactic. Sadly i cant really comment on the Assettracking part as we were mainly looking into a ProjectPlanning solution (as the usual Assettracking doesnt really work for us).
It’s a pretty well thought out system that allows for rather vast adaption to your studios needs. But it also NEEDS that adaption. So typically you wouldnt order and work away but have a bunch of coders (on the southpaw side if you want that) adapt it to your needs.
Another system i recently evaluated and REALLY liked was shotgun. The UI felt really nice and flawless esp. for a webapplication. It also seemed to be a lot closer to production out of the box.
As said i cant really comment on desktop-integration and asset tracking. As for price point i guess i shouldnt really disclose them but as a general hint they are per user + base pricing on a yearly basis. And prices are rather OUCH.
yes, I’m aware of Shotgun, which is another part of the pipeline to go for, but contrary to Tactic, I’ve seen some demos etc… of Shotgun and also, Shotgun is aimed mainly to project tracking and management, but I’m also looking for an asset/data management solution.
I hope to see more of Tactic and Shotgun at Siggraph this year.
Thanks for your input, I appretiate it. Cheers,
