Hello everybody,
About some days when I have finished my last portfoliowork I am going to search for an internship. But I am not so sure how long the email has to be and the things I (don’t) have to say.
My first impression of this email would be :
- Little presentation of who I am
- Country
- School
- Personality
- Function
- The reason why I contact
- Internship
- Why this gamestudio ?
- The reason why I think I am suitable for the job
- Portfolio link
Would I send a pdf of my whole portfolio as an attachment with the mail?
Would I send a document of my resume as an attachment with the email?
Greetings,
Robbert-Jan Brems
Every job app email I’ve ever sent was a couple sentences with a link to a site containing a resume and reel.
I like to keep in mind that the person on the other end of the email is a human. And it’s likely you are one out of 500 unread emails that week. So get to the point, let your stuff get to them as quickly as possible. Any additional info should be available should they be interested in pursuing further.
“Hi, my name is John Doe and I heard you are looking for a character artist. I have 5 years industry experience on well-known projects. Here is a link to my resume and portfolio:”
And thats about it. Any other details should be in the resume.
One problem you’ll be running into is, your resume won’t stand out because you’re out of school and I don’t know how great your portfolio is. I’d suggest a ‘cover letter’ paragraph for companies you really want to work for or have a rich history, and also seeing if you can be introduced to someone at the studio through a friend of a friend, to pass your application along to who needs to see it. Just be careful about that last bit, though, cold-contacting someone at random can really backfire, so make sure you are introduced properly and don’t nag too much (and be gracious!).
