Silly question really

Hi,

This is my job: Character/animation pipeline design/tools, general rigging, occasionally having a hand in exporter/engine pipeline and tools.
This is not my job: Shaders, environment, texture budgets, lighting etc.
I would consider myself a senior and that has been my title in the past.

Would you think being hired as a Technical Artist, Technical Animator or Technical Character Artist should make much of a difference? Also with regards to future options and salary?

Thanks

What a job is called totally depends on where your work, or where you are applying for work. Each company has different internal titles for jobs, and since TA is such a small and varied industry, I wouldn’t put too much stock into titles. If you are reasonably comfortable in a future theoretical interview, you can make them understand that regardless of title, your skills and responsibilities are at a certain level. For reference, The US Army has a “Captain”, and the US Navy has a “Captain”, but they are not the same rank or responsibilities.

Titles are notoriously bad guide to actual skills, so stress the actual skills and accomplishments. Think of this ahead of time, when writing a resume, and then reinforce what you’ve written in the verbal interviews.

It’s always a good idea to walk into an interview with a translation guide in your head – “It seems like what you call X is what we call Y”. Laying out a clear idea of what you’ve been responsible for and what level of autonomy or managerial responsibility is also important – some people are “leads” because they’ve been around long enough to get a title, others because they are managers, and others because they do technical planning or architecture. Some people are “senior” because they are veterans, others because they are highly skilled, others because they don’t want to be managers but still want more money and a better title for their niche tech skills. It’s a good (albeit kind of dull) topic for conversation with peers, since it’s easier to be fluent in an interview if you can say “our system is sort of like X’s – we have split tech and managerial leads for each group,” and have some general idea of how it’s done elsewhere.

Outside of lateral moves inside big companies, there’s little standardisation. You can never have too much intel

Thanks guys!

Moving From a more flat title structure at work, we are now supposed to become junior, mid level, senior and so on. In connection with that a re-titeling from technical artists to technical animator was suggested.

As i suspected there is not much in it, i just wanted to check for any pit-falls

Your potential pitfall is if they want to move you to a “lesser” role and adjust your pay accordingly.

Please tell me something about modern abstract paintings, I’m hoping for your answer. Thank you!
