Ive recently found out im not being kept on for future projects, which there wasn’t any promise of but it was hinted at upon taking this job in the first place.
I also just found out that a student i’ve was asked to start helping is to take on the role that if I were kept on, I would have done.
This is a small studio and I have always tried my best to go further than was needed and get on well with everyone to try to ensure further work. Now though, I cant help but feel bitter. I understand the reasons, the student will probably be considerably cheaper, and business-wise that make sense, I guess I just thought it wouldn’t happen in a small, close-knit studio.
With just over a month til the end of this project, im now obviously looking for new work.
Im just curious whether this really is the way things roll in this industry (obviously it wont happen everywhere, but as a rule of thumb) as ive always tried to help out my colleagues, whether that’s really the way to go or should I just look out for number1?
Helping out colleagues is the way to go, it isn’t the students fault that the company you are doing work for has made a poor decision. It sounds like you wouldn’t want to work there long term anyway if this is how they operate.
nah i’m definitely not blaming the student, they have to take any opportunity they can get, so I completely understand that.
I suppose it was just abit of a shock, probably my own fault for being naive and perhaps expecting to be kept on lol.
It’ll be good in getting a kick up the backside to get myself somewhere, it just put the worry in my head that many companies may operate like this, in which you always have to be on guard, which would be a real shame.
In these situations it is best to focus on what you next move will be then losing energy in being mad/annoyed/… Just see what you can learn from it and maybe see this as a new beginning.
I’m sort of in the same boat, just having gotten laid off from a job that I’d been at for nearly 4 years. I made the effort to leave a good impression and hopefully will work with that company again in the future.
It’s best not to burn bridges. Who knows, someday you may end up working with some of those same people and if they’re last memory of you is bad, it won’t make a good work environment.
Yeah definitely, i’ve got no intentions of burning any bridges and screwing myself over in the long run, and for better or worse, its something im learning from.
Students aren’t as good as experienced workers. The cost saving/ work quality may not work out. Your employer might realise this and could end up asking you back.
I would say it’s best not to keep your guard up or to look out for number one. Because when you do go to other companies, people there will feel that, even if you don’t mean to come off that way. The joy and curse of life is that nothing is certain. You could go anywhere and be promised anything, but the truth is the future isn’t guaranteed. So you’re better off trying your hardest and helping out as much as you can, cause really it’s those people who will end up getting you jobs, or helping you out in the future. So yes it sucks that you will be cut off at the end of the month, but a better job may be right around the corner. And honestly, if you’re a hard work and an easy going- friendly person, you won’t have too much trouble finding another gig. Just apply yourself like a madman. Personally I would say the other lesson to take from this experience is that you always keep your work up to date, so if this ever happens you won’t have to waste time updating your reel and resume, and can just jump into applying for places.
Last thing is, be thankful that you are at least aware of your end date. I was at a company that gave me no warning or any signs and just casually told me on like a tuesday that my last day was that day, just as I was leaving to go home none the less. So sometimes people are shitty, but it was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.
So good luck man, and however bitter or annoyed you might be, just remember things will turn out arite, just gotta believe.
cheers Carlo890, i never thought about actually knowing my end date.
Yeah i agree with you, its just the way things are, and I dont think i could not help colleagues out, thats not me.
Cheers again for your thoughts guys, it has put some things in perspective and yeah, the futures bright n all that
