Senior Technical Artist
The Technical Artist acts as the bridge between Artists and Engineers. Individuals in this role are proactive technically-inclined problem solvers who demonstrate a strong sense of creativity and respect for aesthetics.
Candidates can be from an Art, Design, Mathematics, Engineering or Science background; however they must demonstrate a comfort level with both art and technology.
Working with Programming/Technical staff the Technical Artist ensures that CG assets are easily created, iterated on, and integrated into the game without sacrificing artistic integrity.
The Senior Technical Artist position is a full-time position in Artworks, which is the central content creation group at Electronic Arts Canada. We develop visual content (characters, environments, props, fx, lighting, etc.) for all of the sports titles at the studio (FIFA, NBA, NHL, Fight Night, etc.). We have a strong commitment to delivering large volumes of high quality art assets on time and on budget, and consistently strive for improvement in visuals, tools, processes, and workflow.
Responsibilities
- Integrate art assets across branches and into the game; build and validate selected art assets
- Test and validate selected game builds for deployment to the artists
- Ensure continuous asset build stability; debug asset failures
- Produce art assets or placeholders where necessary
- Shared responsibility for the technical delivery of all art assets to the game team
- Maintain art asset pipelines and artist toolsets
- Interact daily with artists and other technical artists to identify challenges and provide solutions
- Ensure compliance with requirements and specifications (such as naming conventions, memory budgets, performance metrics, etc.) for all art assets
Skills
- Detail-oriented and thorough capacity to wrangle thousands of files. Perforce knowledge is a plus.
- Good understanding of at least one 3D package, preferably Maya
- Knowledge of the CG fundamentals: modeling, texturing/shading/surfacing, rigging, animation, lighting, rendering, compositing
- Scripting experience with Python and/or Mel / Maya API is a bonus
- Willingness to learn proprietary tools and pipelines
- Good aptitude for troubleshooting issues
- Strong communication skills, with a willingness to take direction from lead technical artists
