New poster meet'n'greet - totally not a bot

Hi all, I’ve been a lurker on this site for months now, thought it was time to start posting. I’m an RIT Bachelors student in Medical Informatics who is interested in transitioning into technical artist jobs. I’ve drawn and painted since high school, recently taught myself how to use Maya on my own time, and love what I’ve read about technical artists.

So, skillset: I’m a programmer and scripter (Java, Python, C, Cache/Mumps, Bash, PhP, etc) with heavy emphasis on creating tools and databases for clients (usually doctors). I’ve taught myself most of what I know about modeling, rigging, texturing and animating using Maya and reading out of a used text

I hope to get more involved around here and, truly, if anyone reading this sees a glaring hole (or many holes) in what I know, I would love feedback - that way I can work on improving it.

Welcome

Hmm, this reads like a bot’s post…jk welcome.

Hi JT,
Welcome! Though I’m newer than you here, haha…

It’s awesome that you’re learning all that by yourself. That must be hard.
If you’re serious about it, I’d suggest you to plan and produce a demo reel, which showcases your skills.

No person can know all of these: Java, Python, C, Cache/Mumps, Bash, PhP, etc

Must be a bot :p:

Don’t forget PyMEL, it’s a new up-and-comer in the field.

Curious, do you have tools/scripts interacting with the databases you’ve made? If so, wondering what you’ve found worked best for you. I’m trying to get Pletcher’s recommended SQLAlchemy up and running. Little bit of overhead at the beginning, though.
