Hello everyone, this is my first post so I figured why not start off on a high note. This is my first completed demo reel that I came out of school with. Feel free to leave any kind of critque, both positive or negative, I enjoy both.
My website is also www.haffnertd.com, since my signature isn’t showing up.
wonderful reel, most student pieces don’t come out this professionally. Where did you graduate from?
You reel was very nicely done, but one thing I’ve been told over and over is that my reel needs to not be longer than 1:00, because the whole of our industry has A.D.D. It’s not so much a suggestion, but definitely something to think about.
I graduated from Full Sail University in December. They tell us to keep it under 2 min, mine is 2 min 32 seconds. Most of the modeling demo reels, the animation demo reels, those were all under 1 min, but keeping a rigging reel under 2 min was tough enough, under 1 min, I don’t really see that ever happening.
Yeah keeping it short is tough haha, but even so she’s right about the ADD.
Great material on the reel but I think some of it could be sped up or shortened a little for greater effect. You have to assume they have 237 reels to watch before lunch and you don’t want to keep them waiting even for a few extra seconds. Even things like your namecard, etc can be trimmed to the bare minimum to get right into the good stuff.
I liked the dynamic wing setup you made, very cool. Shoulders look nice too, though it would be cool to see the deformation on the shoulder when the arm stretches towards the back.
I think 2 minutes is fine for a rigging reel. For modeling, texturing, and animation you could get a good idea of the artist’s capabilities pretty fast.
With rigging, it’s not that simple. You’re demonstrating functionality.
Though I did think the part with the boat ran a bit long. Since it’s right in the beginning, it could mean that someone would stop the video too soon.
My reel was at about 3 to 5 minutes (depending on the cut) so don’t worry about length as long as you have relevant stuff to show during that time.
I do agree that the boat is not the strongest point and should not take such a prominent spot as the opening sequence of your reel.
Thanks for the feed back. I could possibly put out the second shot of the boat to make it shorter. It has also been suggested by a few people to take my script and toss it at the beginning of the reel as well. Comments on that?
