Heya guys. this is my first post. Recently I’ve gone through the Animation friendly rigging series.I’ve come to find that the first ball rig that is explained has one very important missing bit.
Jason did not explain how a bouncing ball can squash, maintain the squash and still roll on a surface. So what i did it tried my own method for this. and its quite simple.
My steps were as follow:
1: create the ball.
2a: create locator.
2b: Parent constrain the ball the the locator.
3: attach non-linear squash deformer to the ball.
4: move deformer pivot to locator’s position.
5: squash the ball and rotate the ball on an axis.
But now what if the ball needs to squash its itself on another surface other than the grid? this means i would need to modify the pivot(locator) and squash and rotate it from the new position.
If anyone could help me with this delema that would be much appreciated.
I have a sneaky suspicion ill have to use scripting.
Could you have 2 linear deformers?
When it is squishing on the floor, animate the 1st linear deformer’s envelope to 1 and the 2nd to 0.
When it is squishing against something else, animate the envelopes oppositely.
Another thing I like to do for advanced deformers sometimes, is to have a separate rig. Duplicate the geometry, deform it in some special way and then use that as a blendshape back to the original geometry. (That might not apply to you right now, but it is an idea to keep in mind.)
Your post got me curious, so I played a little in maya and made this:
Brillitant solution Matt! I enjoyed watching your video!
Heya Matt. Thanx for the quick tut. I appreciate the help. love the technique. Was wondering though if there is any way you can prevent the role of the texture on the rig. if been trying to sort that out as well.
one of my Buddies showed me how he did it it Max but I cant translate it very well to Maya.

I haven’t sat down and actually finalized this setup so I see what you mean, I’m gonna play around and see what I can come up with. I wonder if a lattice might not help, but I could be wrong, I know what behavior you wanting to see and it would be ideal to have for sure.

On the video you undid something and stopped the recording, i lost you a bit. would you be so kind as to guide me through the last bit again.
