Modular Rigging in BF3 - Facial Animation - Question

Hi guys,

does anyone know, how I can get this talk by Johan Ramström from DICE?

http://www.siggraph.org/s2011/for_attendees/talks/sessions/123

Are there any recordings or a PDF?

I think they did a very good job on the interrogation cutscenes in the game. They are very believable and nice to watch.

Does anybody know how they did it?

  • Bones vs blendshapes
  • Mocap vs keyframe
  • Prerendered vs realtime
  • Virtual model vs cast

Thanks,

Chris

Ooh yeah this would be a nice to have, hope someone can help track it down

that presentation was cancelled, so i imagine any media generated for it (if there was any) would have to come straight from the source.

Well Johan is a member of TAO, http://tech-artists.org/forum/member.php?u=731 perhaps we could spam him with PMs?

Oh really, the session was cancelled? Bad for the people who wanted to attend.

Johan Ramström is here at TAO too? :D:

That’s nice.
Instead of spaming him via PM we could make a poll who would be interested in his presentation. Maybe he will make it public only for Tech-Artist.org?

Edit:
I wrote him and asked if he will make his work public. Stay tuned.

Hi guys,

unfortunately I did not get an answer from Johan Ramström, but I’ve seen on the GDC2012 page that he is going to present his work there:

All of you who attend have fun.

Maybe the presentation will be for free in the vault afterwards. fingerscrossed

Chris

I can ask someone i know there to pester him if you like?

Hey,

lucky me! My boss decided to let me attend the GDC this year.

So, I’ll defintely be at this session!

Who else is?

See you there,

Chris

Hi Chris.

Sorry for my late reply, should hang around here more often
Glad you decided to join us at GDC!

Most presentations will be recorded and available on the GDC Vault, hopefully I will be able to publish the presentation on the DICE publication site:
http://publications.dice.se/

See ya there!
Cheers
Johan

Hi Johan,

thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately I didn’t make it to your presentation at the GDC 'cause I already attended another session but I’m looking forward to your slides/PDF or maybe a video? Was it recorded by the way?

By the way I’ve also been at the animation roundtable. So we did see each other even not on purpose.

Cheers,

Chris

Presentation now uploaded!

A short recap video is also available here:

I’m sure the work on the game was spectacular but just to give a little reality check here. I worked at EAC where these technologies were being developed. There really isn’t anything revolutionary that the high-end studios haven’t been doing for years already. EA is still just playing catch up.

Heheh, I didn’t know there are people who think that the stuff presented at GDC is cutting-edge?

Thanks Johan! the short recap video is a nice touch

lucky there isn’t anything revolutionary there so we don’t even have to watch it now…seesh.

Thank you for taking the time to put this together and post it Johan, it is always nice to see this work.

We better watch it now or it will be less revolutionary if watch it later!

Honestly, I never get tired of seeing similar presentations regardless of how not-so cutting edge they may be. I find that while a lot of us may have similar workflow’s and tools there are always unique tidbits that help us all progress just that much more. David Moulder on G+ summed this up to “Convergent Evolution”.
Clearly, the more we share the better we all will become.

Thanks for sharing Johan.

I’d been looking forward to this for a good while now, so thanks very much for sharing (the video was definitely a nice bonus, as I wasn’t able to make out some of the slide images :p).

Thanks guys!

I absolutely agree with Randall, the more we share the closer we will get to the ‘perfect’ tools, step by step

Speaking of FACS, has anyone built a rig that can toggle between raw AU channels and a more animator friendly rig?
