Metahuman workflow (came here to vent)

Just now getting around to learning the metahuman workflow. The tech is incredible but I am surprised by some of the constraints and workflow complexities. This is both feedback and perhaps useful info for newcomers and a way for me to vent a bit of frustration.

Metahuman creator is a website that livestreams the metahuman output through the browser. On one hand it’s impressive tech and it alleviates the need for expensive hardware. On the other hand the stream is lacking in quality and responsiveness.

Character creation. While trying to generate a character I noticed some restrictions. For example I was able to create asymmetrical eyes and ears, but not nose and mouth…Not sure if this is due to a technical restriction or a choice. I feel strongly that asymmetry results in more interesting/realistic characters.

Now lets move on to the import/export process. The custom metahuman that I create lives on a mh server. To import the said mh character into unreal I have to run quixel bridge from within unreal (not the standalone). Every time I run bridge it tells me that I need to update via epic launcher, but I’ve yet to find a way to do this. Epic launcher does not let me update it. But luckily it still works. Then I have to find my custom character in the mh section. But then when I try to import the character the import process seems to get stuck on the generating process. Will try to come back later with the hope that it comes through.

Next I am moving on to the process of getting the mh character to Maya, and it looks like this time I have to use the standalone version of quixel bridge. Will report back once I get it working.

Lastly I wish epic had a unified login process where I would login once and have access to all their sites and tools. Instead I have to login multiple times, each time with a verification code and sometimes the code takes up to 10 mins to arrive in my email.

If any of the above info is wrong, please chime in and let me know what I am doing wrong. I would gladly appreciate it.

Figured out how to update bridge plugin. You need to click on the “installed plugins” link right under the ue5 icon. This will bring up the dialogue box that lets you update.
