Maya student 2011 mirror problem

Hi, I’ve been using the manual for Maya, when I go to mirror my model, it keeps putting the mirror to the wrong side. I follow the manual to the letter, -x and it always puts the mirror image to he wrong side. What’s up with that? I would like to have gotten the basic knowledge of this program before my next term starts, but it looks like I’ll miss the mark. Hope someone can help.

Hey mate, i don’t think you’re gonna miss your mark ^^ can you elaborate on what mirror function are you using tho? Cuz the way most of us mirror our models (i.e. mirroring the other half of a character, or the other half of a symmetrical model, or any model for that matter) is you go Edit -> Duplicate Special. There, set the scale to -1 on the axis you want the model to be along.
Or the simple way - duplicate, then set the scale yourself. Ctrl +D, and set the scale to -n , “n” being your scale number on your axis.

Now if you would like to see your other half of your model as you model it, as you go along, you could use the duplicate special function and set the mode to “instance”. That way, whatever you do to either part of the model (the original or the duplicated part), it does the same on the other.

Hope this helps.
