Maya user here! I’m looking for some good learning resources so I can get up to speed in max rigging as fast as i can.
I already have some on biped tuts but I’m not going to be using biped, I need to learn the intricacies of max bones and custom setups, how to rig from scratch.
I’ve found some vids doing searches, but they dont seem too good, so I wanted to see if anyone with expereince has any killer resources.
If i wanted to pass on a tutorial to get started in Maya rigging it would be Jason Scleifer, Aaron Holly and the cgtoolkit ;). What are the Max equivalents?
Hey Andy, for Max rigging I’ve found that Paul Neale’s dvds are one of the better resources out there. He does a great job at explaining what he’s doing and why and the series of DvDs covers everything from a full body rig setup, to painting weights and using angle deformers, and both morph target and bone based face rigging solutions in 3ds Max.
I’d second those. The only problem with them is, they are getting very old and many new techniques are available (both new features Max has added, and new ideas from the rigging community). I’d use them to get started and provide a foundation, but investigate if there are better ways of doing things before committing to a rig implementation you got from the DVD.

Agreed. At this point im just looking to get oriented to max’s basic methods of doing things and this sounds like a good place to start. However, theres already whisperings about, possibly, using CAT with/as our rigs so im getting up to speed on that and some newer methods of max.
