Max 2008/2011 crashing after the screen is locked for a while

Hey there,

i am currently evaluating new hardware and i am seeing said issue on the Box. It has a Quadro4000 and is running win7 x64. When i lock the screen with max running and wait for a while it seems that max is crashing. I have a hard time making this reproducable, so i wondered if anyone has eventually seen this already. Facts in short:

  • Happens in both 2008 and 2011
  • Happens with both Direct3D and NVidia Performance Drivers it seems (tho i will be revisiting that one)
  • First thought it might be autosave + bad permissions. Also happens without autosave

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Kind regards,
Thorsten

here, max usually crashes, if something related to the display driver changes:

-services › stop/start ‘Desktop Window Manager Session Manager’
-device manager / display adapter › disable/enable nvidia driver

[when the system suspends/hybernates, because it has to restart the driver]

Happens to us too. Seems to be related to the DirectX display not being able to recover from the windows lock. Oddly Autodesk have told me they can’t repro it, but it’s done it in every version of Max from 9 to 2012 at work and at home for me. Doesn’t seem to do it if I stick to wireframe or object colour modes, so it must be something to do with Direct X shaders.

Thanks for the input. We’re not hibernating or suspending tho. Just forcing screen-lock with password entry on unlock. The reason beeing NDAs and Audits. We have had viewport issues of all sorts We do have a script that mostly recovers viewports and in 2011 minimizing before locking usually helps. But i have not seen straight crashes. It doesn’t even want to send a CER dump. Crashes straight away. I do not see that on our non-certified consumer maschines grumble

Thorsten

Yes same here for the same reason. Windows is set to lock after a period of inactivity. But Max won’t recover from this.

Definitely related to directx shaders – happens for me too.
