GUI elements?

Hi everybody. I’m student and I’ll being working with rigs and I’d like to know what animators prefer in a RIG when they will animate a character in some scene.

Would you help me with this? I’m specially interested in the GUI, selection methods and custom UI shelf in Maya for a realistic or toon character.

And what research did you already do? There’s tons of info on rigging, please show you’re even remotely did some homework and I’m pretty sure people want to answer specific questions.

Let us know,

I think this is for a computer course.

Jason, can you tell your classmates to make one thread (with preferably some background and initial ideas) and we’ll give feedback there. Rather than have a bunch of threads scattered around (or I can just merge the other threads into this one).

Johan is sort of right, it’d be useful and you’d be more likely to get responses if you propose some information for discussion yourself- what do you prefer, what do you think people prefer, any background or ideas about the project, etc. Such a general question generally means you can only get general answers, which is probably going to be shorter and inferior to something you’d just find on Google.

Well rob we need to know more specific what kind of shelf elements or other kind of order the animator prefer when he has to select some joint or a group of these.

I mean, different experience and a lot of order different as you can tell us.

I hope you guys understand me cause my english isn’t the best.

what elements in a rigging shelf you preffer?

I work on t.v. and film productions and I usually like to keep things simple in a rig. The only shelf buttons I’ve ever created for animation have been things like “Key Selected”, “Key All”, and “Select All Controls”.

For more complicated jobs, (renaming, mirroring animation, key-frame manipulation, etc.) I’ll create a separate tool with a GUI and likely store it in a menu. I personally don’t care for the shelf.

The main reason is that in the shelf, it tends to get crowded and hard to read and the animators might have their own custom shelf anyway. I’ll put as much of the functionality directly on the rig as I can and keep it as elegant and simple as possible.
