I was curious however, would this type of plugin be practical when rigging for a game? would all the deformation data stay on the rig if it were exported? I’m not planning on doing anything like that, but just curious.

Generally vertex based deformer’s can’t be used by game engines without creating a run-time version and exporting the setup data to the game, OR baking the motion to joints/blendshapes. At least this has been my experience so far…
