EA is hiring (new IP): Sr. Technical Artist - Characters

Overview:

Seeking a highly motivated technical artist for an exciting new IP on Xbox360 and PS3 in the action/adventure genre. Looking for someone who is both technical and creative, and energized by problem solving. This is a major opportunity to contribute to a bold new franchise, heavily backed by the EA Games Label.

Responsibilities:

The Sr. Technical Artist: Characters (STA:C) is responsible for character setup, and delivery of assets to the animation staff \ game engine. Setup includes the creation of new rigs, or the use pre-existing rigging systems to generate animation rigs, binding\skinning the mesh, and setting up the appropriate build environment for the asset. They deal heavily with pipelines, tools, and helping others. The STA:C works with the Technical Character Director and Animation Director for supervision and direction. The candidate should be extremely proactive, be able to identify tools needed, and should be capable of creating new tools to speed up content creation.

Requirements:

  • Works with the Technical Character Director and Animation Director for oversight and direction.
  • Rigging\setup & binding of complex assets: Humans, creatures, weapons, props, vehicles, etc.
  • Exporting of data to engine.
  • Setting up and maintaining pipelines from art to engine.
  • Working with the animation, design, and engineering staff to provide acceptable rigging solutions.
  • Interaction and application of motion capture.
  • Uses mel \ Python to author rigging, animation, and pipeline tools.
  • Understanding of Maya’s rigging systems, nodes, and tools.
  • Understanding of Maya’s smooth binding, and game imposed limitations.

Experience and Qualities Sought:

  • Mel and Python scripting (at a minimum). Understands how to use scripting to build rigs, and rigging pipelines.
  • Tool authoring, and UI font-ends.
  • Current working knowledge of Maya.
  • Previous (or current) animation experience: You’re a good rigger, because you know what it’s like to use bad rigs.
  • Previous (or current) modeling experience: You can direct on how to author models for good runtime deformation.
  • Understanding of shading exturing: You can direct on how to author good textures for runtime deformation.
  • Understanding of video game development and pipelines for current (Xbox 360 \ PS3) systems.
  • Several shipped titles.
  • Customer focused: Know the needs of those you provide solutions too.
  • Ability to evaluate competitive products and learn from their solutions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • High degree of self-motivation and initiative.
  • Enjoys troubleshooting.
  • Enjoys learning.
  • Enjoys making the lives of those around them easier.
  • An avid gamer is a plus.
