Hi folks,
I’m about to start finding a way to more interestingly blend a constant colour over a base texture than the good old multiply. The monochromatic output is offensive to mine eyes, and I’m hoping to find a neat way to introduce some colour variation without blowing the instruction count.
Anyone have any decent papers which spring to mind? I will refresh myself on the sterling stuff from L4D2, but not much else springs immediately to mind, any hints much appreciated!

The truth is there are about as many potential ways as there are people who have done this and none have been perfect. There’s a tradeoff between performance, quality, and workflow that just doesn’t have a silver bullet. You’re best off first defining what you have to work with in terms of texture and instructions, how disruptive a change to existing art and workflows you can make, and then seeing what can give the best quality within those constraints.
This topic comes up every few months and a search in the forums will yield some good results (maybe search for ‘hue’ or something like that).
